For 10 years I went without any treatments for eating disorders. I lived in the darkness of anorexia and bulimia - never calling out for help - just struggling, each day to hide my dark secret.
Keeping my dangerous habits unknown was - at the time - more important than getting any eating disorder treatments. In my mind, the worst possible outcome of my bulimia was to have it discovered. I was living in a secret hell...
I felt as though I was slowly being broken... From the inside out.
Bulimia was winning.
When I reached my 20's, I'd been suffering from bulimia for over 1/2 my life. I was bingeing and purging over 15 times per day... My life was ruled by the evil cycle of bulimia.
On the surface I would abuse myself, hurt myself and hate myself... But, deep down I knew that I was worthy of more. I knew I was worthy of the best treatments for eating disorders available - but I had kept this secret for so long - that sharing felt almost impossible.
At the end of my first year at university, I decided recovery was now or never. I felt that if I didn't take the steps towards recovery right away - it would be too late. With a stomach full of butterflies I booked an appointment to see a counsellor named Amanda.
This was my first true commitment to a life without bulimia.
Sitting in the reception room before my first session, I felt sick with nerves. I'd already thrown up 4 times before our morning meeting - which reinforced in my head why I was going to see her.
An hour later - after our meeting, I felt a glimmer of hope. That maybe, just maybe - a normal life was achievable. I was so ready to let health, happiness and love return to my life...
Yip, that's right! Fast forward one year from my first session with Amanda and I was completely bulimia free... And still am 6 years later.
I had never imagined that complete bulimia recovery was possible... But it is :)

Obviously the first step in the journey for me was therapy with an excellent and caring therapist... But, unfortunately - it's not always easy to find a good therapist right away... So...

Psychodynamic therapy was the first step in my recovery... Basically psycodynamic therapy is talking. Simple.
Bulimics hold so much sadness, anger and frustration inside from life experiences... Often, this is what causes the bulimia in the first place. Add to this all the years of shame and frustration from binging and purging... It's just too much... You need to let it out!
I chose to talk to a therapist... But, you can choose a family member, teacher or friend if you prefer... Just make sure it's somebody that you respect and trust.
Don't hold anything back... Talk until you cry, scream and laugh... Let it all out!
Keep doing this, a few times a week, until you feel as though you're ready to let go of these negative emotions... Make the commitment to moving forward with your bulimia recovery...
It's time to change your brain...
One of the best ways to end your binge and purge behaviors is through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)... The name might sound complicated but the idea behind it is actually quite simple...
CBT focuses on helping you deal with a specific problem. In my case it was binge eating and purging. CBT taught me to identify my negative thought patterns that resulted in binges and purges... Once I identified these, I made goals and plans to over come them. In time, I wiped the destructive thought patters from my mind completely... And, you can do the same.
The best way to learn about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and how to do it is by:
a) Seeing a therapist who specializes in it or,
b) Reading as many books as you can on the subject.. I have a few suggestions below:

Okay, so this might sound a bit science-geek... But it's actually pretty simple...
When we repeat a behavior time and time again, it gets wired into our brains as neural pathway connections... Habits! The more often we do an action and the more intensity it involves, the stronger those habits become... It's no wonder then that bulimia was a habit that was SO strongly engrained in my mind. 10 years, 15 times a day sometimes... It all starts making sense!
The good news is that you can re-wire your brain back to being a normal eater... and when you do this, it will be bye bye to bulimia - for life!
Rewiring your subconscious mind back into normal eating is a key part of The Bulimia Recovery Program which I run. It's one of the most important parts of bulimia recovery as it results in a lasting recovery and life of freedom!
To put it simply, rewiring takes place through repeating the new desired action as often as you can. It can be hard as hell at first because there are so many neural pathways trying to get you to go the other way... Keep reminding yourself that it will get easier!
Just as a path is defined the more it's walked... So are your neural pathways :)
