Throwing up blood

by Rachel
(US)

Hey, I have thrown up a little blood a few times, but its just a little mixed with my vomit. I've done research but I am getting vague answers or stuff saying 'you can die immeditely' which I doubt.
What could this possibly mean? I know it isn't life threatening, I just want to make sure it's not dangerous or anything.
Thanks for the wonderful site! :)

Hi Rachel,

There could be a few reasons for the blood in yoru vomit - some serious - and others not so serious...

If you use your fingers to purge, you may have scratched the back of your throat... This is quite common in bulimia sufferers - but isn't extremely dangerous...

On the other hand, it could be a Mallory Weiss tear - which is a small tear in the lining of the esophagus... This isn't normally life threateneing, but in severe cases it can be.

I can't say exactly what the blood in your vomit is from... And, it would be wrong of me not to let you know that any blood in vomit is reason to get medical help. Please consider going to see your doctor... Don't feel ashamed - I promise you that on a day to day basis a doctor would see way crazier things!

Bye for now.

Shaye-
you have no idea how helpful you have been. i've been bulimic for over 8 years now, and i'm only getting better at hiding it. i don't want that, but i can't help it. i grew up in Los Angeles with a sister who has never been more than 100lbs in her life...naturally. so for somebody to actually be simpathetic and encouraging instead of "this is dangerous, just stop doing it!!" is incredibly helpful. anyway...thank you.
