Telling Someone about bulimia

by Anonymous
(Canada)

I have not been diagnosed, nor do I really want to be. I do however want this behavior to go away. I binge and purge and starve and over exercise and I have been doing this for a long time now. I know that I definitely have an eating disorder but I haven't told anyone. I want to get help but I do not want my family involved and I don't want them to know at all. I am already seeking help for depression OCD and Generalized anxiety, I was able to get therapy for these without my parents finding out but I was wondering if there's a different policy when it comes to eating disorders as they can be a lot more harmful. I'm 16 and I live in Toronto Ontario Canada. Can I get treated for my eating disorder without my family finding out?? Any advice would be great, thanks.

Hi there,

I am really sorry to hear about the tough times you are going through... Please hang in there - because you never know what happiness lies just around the corner!

I am not entirely sure about counselor/therapist privacy policies in Canada... However, I would think they would be similar to here in New Zealand. If you tell a therapist something here in NZ - I believe it is completely private - unless somebody's life may be in immediate danger.

Ring up your help center - even anonymously - and ask them - they will be able to tell you.

I hope this helps and good luck with everything! 16 was a difficult age for me - but I can tell you it gets better... It's not easy being a teenager.

Love
Shaye
