medication during bulimia recovery

Hey Shaye,

I really can't believe i found your website. I was mindlesses searching the internet for some answers on google this morning after a binge/purge episode, and I came across your site!!

I am so sick of being in the prison of my body. I am 23 going on 24 and I have been bulimic since I was 11. Seeing you really gives me hope. However, I feel like I have tried so many times before and I always always end up back where I started.

Did you go on any medications or anything when you were going through your recovery? I am currently seeing a therapist, but I am not too comfortable with him so I am looking for a new one. I would like to do this on my own with therapy and diet, but just wondering if you had any other insight or if you tried anything eles during your recovery.

Thank you thank you thank you for your site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Elise!

So awesome to hear from you! I am so glad that you stumbled across me site :)

I know exactly how you feel saying that you feel you are a prison... It's just like i say on my homepage...

"Bulimia is like a prison, it captures your soul and beats you down until you know nothing else besides the gray walls around you."

but, the good news is that you can recover - I promise! Everyone has it in them - somewhere... it's just digging deep, getting the right support, and trusting your body to handle food again... It's a long journey - but oh my god, it is wonderful!

During my recovery I did see a therapist - who I liked very much. She was a woman which I think helped... It made me feel more comfortable - that she would know where I was coming from with 'body image' issues. It's really important to feel comfortable with your therapist - so great move of yours to keep looking!

I didn't take any medications, besides probiotics (to help build up healthy bacteria in my tummy again)... In hindsight I think it would have been helpful to take potassium pills - just to be on the safer side (bulimics often have low potassium - which can lead to sudden heart attack) It turns out I didn't need them (because I'm still here!) But, for others, going through the same thing as I was going through, I think it would be a good idea. You might need to get a blood test from your doctor to be prescribed these... But, it's worth it...

On the other hand, you could try to drink a electrolyte-replenishing smoothie each morning... These are packed with vital electrolytes, but of course, to absorb them, you'll need to hold this down. remind yourself though, that your tummy can handle it - and it will do wonders for your health!

I hope that this helps... Please keep in touch as much as you need on this site! I always answer questions and do my best to give advice and support on every bulimia story, support group post and comment that people leave on my site :)

Stay strong and remember to be kind to yourself!
