Am I In Bulimia Recovery? A Message From Danielle...

What is considered "in bulimia recovery?"

Danielle's question got me thinking back to that beautiful year, when I finally managed to recover from bulimia...

How did I know then, that I was on the home stretch... That recovery was within my grasp - and that all I had to do was keep putting one foot in front of the other...

And, how did I deal with some of the speed bumps that slowed me down along the way...

Here's Danielle's message

Hi Shaye!

I haven't purged in 2 and a half weeks but unfortunately I am still binging but trying very hard...

I'm disappointed in myself because I binged last night and then I binged again today from 2.00-5.30pm... I felt as though I was kind of giving up today, like I shouldn't have given in that easily...

I was wondering... What is considered in bulimia recovery?

Does being in recovery start when you have your first day of not purging and continue even if you binge like I have been doing? Or, once you binge are you considered out of recovery?

Does binging mean I'm no longer "in bulimia recovery"?

I hope my question makes sense...

Also, since I am binging and not purging, I have gained weight like crazy and very fast within the past month. When I finally do stop binging and stick to a balanced diet with the normal amount of calories in it will the binge eating weight go away? Or, will my body not go to its healthy weight because of the excess binge weight? I'm afraid the binging weight will never leave me!

Thanks for all your help Shaye, I truly appreciate all the support and care you've given me.

My Reply: You are in bulimia recovery!

Hi Danielle!

Good to hear from you again... and, I have good news for you...

YOU ARE DEFINITELY IN BULIMIA RECOVERY!

You see, bulimia recovery is a process... it doesn't only happen when you stop bingeing or stop purging... Or stop them both...

Bulimia recovery happens gradually over time, and is more a frame of mind than a place marked by 'X' number of binges or 'X' number of purges!

Once you have set your mind to walking the road of recovery, pushing through it's ups and downs... Then... You are in recovery!

Danielle, you're walking the rocky (but exciting) road of recovery - towards the destination of being 'fully recovered'... It takes sheer determination to resist the urge to purge after a binge... It takes a real commitment to recovery... Which you have shown!

And yes, you will stabilize at your natural weight once you begin to eat and exercise normally again. It may take time to shed the weight, but try to be patient. Try to shift your focus onto full recovery :)

The next step in your recovery journey is to try and figure out ways to reduce your binge urges....

Here are some articles I've written about how to deal with them...

Please read those articles - and take action on them... Those steps helped me - and I know that with persistence and practice, they will help you too.

On another note... I'd also just like to reinforce how important it is to replace criticism with compassion and curiosity...

Instead of criticizing yourself for bingeing, try to feel...

Compassionate... Tell yourself that this is a journey full of ups and downs - but you're going to push on and be kind to yourself through it all.

Curiosity... Ask yourself why you think you binged.. Were you restricting your food? Were you denying yourself of any tasty foods? Were you using food to numb emotions? Try get to the bottom of it... Be a kind and gentle detective! Not a cruel police officer enforcing the law!

Learning how to deal with binge urges through compassion, curiosity and the two tips above will help take you to the next phase of recovery...

The phase when you begin to see glimpses of what life is truly like without bulimia...

I'm excited for you because I remember being where you are now... And, I know what beauty lies ahead!

Remember... Keep putting one foot in front of the other - and you can't help but get to where you want to go!

Love
Shaye
