Consequence of Bulimia: Memory Loss (And Tips on How To Save Yours!)

Today I'm going to be talking about a consequence of bulimia which I experienced quite severely during my years of bulimia, and I'm also going to talk to you just a little bit on how you can prevent this side effect of bulimia from happening to you.

The consequence of bulimia I'm talking about is memory loss...

Don't fall on the floor in a mad panic. I'm not talking about Alzheimer's or dementia or anything like that, but I'm talking about the years that you lose to bulimia, years where your mind is so preoccupied with thoughts of food and bingeing and throwing up, and thoughts of how you can change your body, and obsession with all those sorts of bulimia-related things that you're not aware of what's going on around you...

You're not aware of all the good things that are happening in your life, so you don't remember them.

It's actually incredible how many people I meet even to this day, and they'll come up to me and be like, "Oh, hi Shaye, how are you?" and I have not even got the vaguest memory of them...

I feel so guilty because I think...

"You remember me, and you remember things about my family and about my past, and I just don't remember you at all."

For a long time I didn't realize why I had these experiences and why I seemed to have this large block of really bad memory. Over the years, and as I've helped other people with their bulimia recovery and I've noticed similarities with them, I've realized that it was because I was bulimic that I experienced memory loss.

It was a consequence of bulimia that I didn't make memories to start off with...

I wish that I could remember a lot more from those years, because you're only a teenager once and I don't remember that much from it...

Tips on how you can prevent experiencing this consequence of bulimia – memory loss.

Even though you're suffering from bulimia right now, it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy your life, and it doesn't mean that you can't make the most of certain events and things that you do want to remember.

The next time you're at a party or some event that you want to remember for the rest of your life, just remember this video. Think back to it, close your eyes for a few seconds, and just take a deep breath...

Try to relax your body and remind yourself that you're working towards your bulimia recovery and that despite being bulimic you want to remember this special moment in your life.

Try to calm yourself and take in all the sounds, all the sights, everything around you, and try to make a special place in your brain for that memory.

Of course the only way to fully avoid bulimia related memory loss is to beat bulimia...

But you're working on that :)

I know it can feel like a long and slow journey, but keep putting one foot in front of the other and you will get there.

There will come a time when you don't need to focus on remembering different events and memories and things in your life, because you won't have those preoccupied thoughts of food the whole time. Your memories will be created naturally.

Until then, as I say, calm yourself down by taking a few deep breaths and remind yourself to make those memories.
