Bulimia Nervosa In Men: Tony's Secret Struggle

bulimia in men
Bulimia in men is a
destructive illness - just
as it is in women.

Bulimia nervosa in men is a life shattering illness - just as it is with women. The struggles that female bulimics go though every single day - are matched by the male bulimic.

I suffered from bulimia for over 10 years and for the majority of those years I thought bulimia was a 'womens-only' illness. That was until I found out about my mate Tony...

Tony was a guy of average build and average/good looks... Just a normal guy I guess you'de say.

As a kid he's been a chubby boy - and was teased a little at school. He always acted as though he didn't care... And, as he got older he even poked fun at his own chubbiness some times...

But, beneath this carefree shell - Tony was hurting. He hated his body and all he wanted was to lose weight and find a good looking girlfriend.

At the age of 14 - as I did at the age of 8 - Tony embarked on a diet to lose weight... But depriving himself of food made things spin out of control.

Just as I did... He developed bulimia.

Tony's good friends found out about what he was doing and asked him about it. He told them he had stopped - but being bulimic myself, I knew he hadn't. His self image was terrible - and he could barely stand to look in the mirror.

Because I was bulimic, I noticed his behaviors that screamed bulimia... Tony would always be munching on something and he'd always have food in his bag. All our get togethers had to include food of some sort... If they didn't I could see he felt anxious and frustrated... Just like I did.

Once Tony had eaten - I knew to watch. Off he'd go to the bathroom... Or, sometimes he'd go 'take a piss' in the bushes... I knew he was going to throw up... Because my brain worked the same as his - and I was normally off to do the same...

Bulimia ruled our lives.

I wish I had talked to Tony about our bulimia and been there as a shoulder for him to cry on... But all this happened 8 years ago - and I was too ashamed of my illness to speak out...

Nobody knew I was bulimic - and I wanted it to stay that way.

I haven't seen Tony for many years now - but there's something niggling me inside telling me to forward my website to him - just in case he's still suffering.

Bulimia nervosa in men isn't as common as it is in women - but it happened to Tony and thousands of guys just like him...
