Bulimia Hair Loss - My story of Balding

Bulimia hair loss was the last thing on my mind when I ran behind the lucky bean tree at the age of 8 and threw up. I never thought that this simple act would be something that would spiral out of control and eventually steal so much from my life...

Including my hair...

bulimic
Before bulimia stole
my hair...

As a kid I had always had lovely hair... It was thick, healthy and very shiny. It reached 1/2 way down my back and I was very proud of it.

'Princess hair' I used to call it!

Then I became bulimic.

At first, I didn't notice any change... But over the years, my thick 'princess hair' began to look frizzy, fluffy and extremely thin... I even had little bald spots!

My princess hair had turned into 'homeless hair' :(

And as a teenager I hated my 'homeless hair'...

I used to tie it up in a tight bun (that was smaller than a golf ball!) and slap all the frizzies back with a bucket load of cheap hair gel.

My bad hair days only got worse as I got older...

Bulimia was causing a constant war between me and my hair!

Every time I glanced down in the shower, I'd see even more casualties falling from my head...

The shower drain was constantly blocked from the victims of my battle with bulimia.

My bulimia recovery - and getting my 'Princess hair' back

When I hit 20 years old, something clicked inside my head and I realized the massive damage I was doing to my body...

The side effects of bulimia were not only making me ugly - they were killing me.

Bulimia was stealing my health, my hair - and if I didn't take action, bulimia would steal my life too.

It was time to recover... I didn't know where to start, but I was going to keep trying until I got there...

Recovery was a long and at times, freaking difficult journey! It stretched over an entire year...

But it was a journey that I would do a million times over knowing where it got me...

To health, happiness - and eventually - to a head full of hair!

How Long Did It Take Me To Get My Hair Back?

Bulimia hair loss can't be reversed overnight... Think about it...

First of all you need to nourish your body well... And it can take time before those nutrients reach your hair follicles - there are more important things for your body to take care of first... Healing your heart, detoxifying etc etc!

After the more important stuff has been taken care of and your nutrients find their way to your hair follicles - your hair still needs to grow...

bulimic
Bulimia hair loss - no more! :)

Hair grows at a rate of about 6 inches per year...

So if you want a nice long mop of healthy hair - it may take a few years before you get there...

But please, be patient...

Your body is resilient - and given the chance, it will bounce back...

Your skin will begin to glow, your eyes will begin to sparkle and your hair will begin to flourish once again!

Just like mine did :)

One of the awesome members of my private online recovery community (you can learn more about joining this program and community here) mentioned in her blog the other day that she used pre-natal supplements to thicken her hair up again. I am not sure if this is recommended by doctors - but Emmie seems to be using them and having a lot of success.

For me, it's been over 6 years since my bulimia recovery and it's so good to have my hair (and life) back!

Bulimia hair loss is a thing of the past for me...

And if you begin walking your journey to recovery, the physical effects of bulimia will become a thing of the past for you too!
