Today I'm going to be talking about night time binge eating and purging and what you can do to prevent it...
If you're anything like I was when I was recovering from bulimia, night times are a weak spot. They were definitely my weak spot. During my bulimia recovery I'd managed to improve my bingeing and purging throughout the day, then I just had those night time binge eating sessions which lingered on for many months.
I tried all sorts of tips to improve them and to eventually stop them, and the one thing that I found that was essential in stopping those night time binge eating sessions was to follow my structured eating plan throughout the day. I found that nourishing myself with enough food and enough variety of different and tasty foods during the day helped me to not feel that desperate need to overeat in the evenings.
Something else that I found really important to prevent night time binge eating and purging was to have my pre-bed snack in the evenings and to make it something like a fun food or a treat, something that I could sit down with a cup of tea at the end of the day and unwind and enjoy the snack...
I know a lot of people don't feel comfortable eating just before bed, but I've found – and quite a few people in the bulimia recovery program and community have also commented on this – that having that night time snack enables them to just push through the evening without that binge and purge.
As I say, it took me many months in my bulimia recovery to get to the point that I could get through the evenings without binge eating and purging, and a lot of this was thanks to following my structured meal plans and having that night time snack.
Something else that really helped me push through the evening binges was just to take one day at a time. The thought of never bingeing again actually really scared me when I was in my bulimia recovery.
So instead of every night saying...
“All right, this is it. I want to get through tonight and never binge again,”
I'd say to myself...
“All right, let me get through tonight, then tomorrow if I feel the desperate urge to binge, then I can deal with that tomorrow and I can if I want to, but right now I'm just focusing on tonight and I'm just going to try and get through tonight.”
Taking it one minute, one hour, or one evening at a time was a really helpful way that I could push through those evenings.
I'd suggest that you try these 3 tips on preventing night time binge eating and purging. I hope they help you push through those night time binges just as much as they helped me. You will need to be persistent and you will need to keep trying. It won't happen right away that you'll get through the evenings without bingeing, but every time you slip up, just jump back on the recovery road and keep pushing forward...
As long as you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you WILL reach recovery.
My action step for you today to help you prevent night time binge eating and purging is to simply watch my video on structured eating. It's the first video of my free video series. You can watch these bulimia recovery videos online - find out more here.
